Gainsborough and District Primary School 7 a side Mixed Football Competition

Mixed football show 6 of the best!

Last Thursday night Gainsborough & District Primary Schools’ Sports Association held their annual 7 a side mixed football competition. With a great turn out of six strong teams; Lea, Charles Baines, Scotter, Morton, Blyton cum Laughton, and holders for the last 5 years in a row, Parish the expectations for quality football were high. The watching spectators who braved the cold temperatures were not to be disappointed with games of 7 minutes each way, end to end flowing football and brilliant goals and saves. Under the lights on the TGA astro-turf the three referees made sure the rules of the game were followed as each team had to play each other once. As the results were recorded it was neck and neck with five teams all in with a chance of the main trophy. The final whistle went and the final table was announced. With two competitions being held at the same time the Small School event outcome was declared first. Blyton cum Laughton were worthy winners, amid much jubilation, securing their first ever victory in this competition! Now it was onto the main event, equal 4th were Lea and Charles Baines, 3rd were Scotter, runners up were Morton and clear winners were Parish, who after winning every game had 15 points and were Mixed School champions for an unbelievable 6th year in a row!

Medals were, awarded to the top three schools Parish, Morton and Blyton cum Laughton with trophies for Parish and Blyton cum Laughton. Thanks were given by organiser and Parish teacher John Anderson to the referees from Gainsborough Foundation and Marshalls FC, the schools, footballers, spectators and TGA for the use of the astro-turf.

Parish and Blyton cum Laughton now go through to the Lincolnshire Finals in Skegness in January and February to represent the Gainsborough area.

Parish player Alfie Eccleshall was overjoyed with the win. “We have a great team spirit, with everybody playing their part when we get onto the pitch. We were a bit nervous in our last game against Scotter, because they are such a good team and had beaten us in the league but we managed to beat them in this game!” One of the Parish parents commented, ‘Jose Mourinho might be the ‘Special One’ but with 6 wins in the Mixed tournament and 6 wins in the Girls tournament in the last 6 years, Mr Anderson is surely the ‘Magical One’.

Teacher and football coach John Anderson was delighted with the tournament. ‘To see all the children from all the schools enjoying 2 hours on football was a great advert for local primary schools’ sport. On a personal note I have been so lucky to work with such talented footballers, the victories are all down to them. To win both trophies for six years on the trot must be a world record achievement, it is a real testament to the children that we have achieved this year on year, we are all so proud of the team. We hope both ourselves and Blyton cum Laughton can do the town proud when we go to Skegness.’
