Tewkesbury Athletics - 3rd Place!

In the sizzling heat, on a Tuesday evening, a large group of our junior children competed in the annual Tewkesbury Schools' Athletics Competition, at Tewkebsury School. Despite this being an annual event, this was the first time since 2018 that this event has managed to go ahead, due to COVID 19. We were so excited to return to the track and to compete with all of our other local schools again.

With Mr Lockley on the mic and a team of supportive Tirlebrook staff in the box, the children gathered to compete both as individuals and as a team. The night kicked off with the Year 6 and Year 5 sprints which were extremely competitive! Isaac from Year 5 did, however, manage to achieve a BRONZE medal, coming 3rd in his sprint race, performing excellently against a group of 8 competitors!

The Year 3 and Year 4 sprints followed, with yet another BRONZE win for Jack R from Year 4 and a SILVER medal for Henry (Year 3).

Tirlebrook seemed to get stronger and stronger as the night progressed; Scarlet (Y6) finishing with a BRONZE medal and Alex (Y6) with a SILVER in the 200m sprints. And we did not stop there!

The Year 4 girls flew across the finish line in 3rd place, earning themselves a BRONZE medal. The Year 4 boys absolutely stormed their race, finishing in a strong and very obvious 1st place, gaining the first GOLD medal win for Tirlebrook.  The Year 3 relays followed. The girls ran superbly, positively and they worked brilliantly as a team. The boys worked excellently too and they were able to gain a BRONZE medal for their event.

For the toughest event of the competition, particularly because of the distance but even more so because of the heat, Sami (Y4) and Georgie (Y6) both performed amazingly and both gained a BRONZE medal. Well done to you both!

The 600m sprints were next. Erin and Stan, two of our sensational runners from Year 4, ran brilliantly! Erin sailed into SILVER and Stan even grasping a GOLD! We were simply in awe of your performance.

The Year 5 girls worked well together, passing the baton, smiling over the finish line, but unfortunately did not place in the Year 5 girls relay. The boys in Year 5 performed well, moving from third, to fourth, back into third then first, but did not finish in the top 3 this time. I am sure that next year, you will come back even stronger! The Year 6 girls relay was great to watch and the girls really tried hard with their handovers and it was definitely clear that they had a strong, athletic team. The Year 6 boys were the next to receive a medal, finishing in 3rd place and gaining BRONZE!

And that was just on the track! Despite many wins and some losses in the track events, Tirlebrook quite clearly have hidden talent in the field events. Sami, Jack R, Betsy and Thumelo all received a GOLD medal, coming first in their field event (throwing or jumping). Hayden received a BRONZE medal for her jumping performance too. All of which contributed to Tirlebrook's final score and overall performance. We also had many, many 4th place finishes, who only just missed out on a medal, including: Riley, Stan, Theo L, Layla, Isaac C. All of which earned a great number of points for our team!

The competition was very fierce and very competitive. Watching from the finish line, it was clear that one school had earned a great number of points for their performance and, in fact, they did actually win overall. That victory went to Carrant Brook. The John Moore most definitely dominated many of the track events and until our field event results were in, it was clear that they would finish before us too. However, because of the field events and the children's performance in the throwing and jumping competition, Tirlebrook, at one point, took the lead and were finishing in second place. But, after collating the results from the final relays, The John Moore managed to hang on to the 2nd place position, meaning Tirlebrook finished in a very respectable 3rd place.

However, all was not lost, despite finishing 3rd overall, we did come 1st in the field events, with Carrant Brook. We must remember to get that trophy to display in 6 months time from them!

Well done to every single child who participated. We are so extremely proud of you all!

Thank you so much to all of the staff who came to organise the team, lead the event, first aid, help hand out medals and even put up a gazebo!

Thank you also to all of the parents and families who came to support. It was wonderful to see you all and I know that the children were thrilled to be back competing with their families able to spectate.

Well done Tirlebrook!
