East Staffs Tag Rugby

Mr Randles, 4 Apr 2019

Teams for Y3/4 and Y5/6 from across East Staffs competed in the Tag Rugby event.

We entered one team into each competition.  The Y3/4 team was comprised of children who mainly had not played rugby before.  In each game the team scored tries, and just lost out in two games by only one try!  A super effort from the rugby players of the future.  Thanks go out to Miss Fletcher, one of our lunchtime supervisors, but also one of our after school club coaches.  (And a member of Burton Rugby Club.)  She has recently completed some training courses that were funded by the School Sports Premium to enable her to become involved in our after school sport programme.  At the end of this year, we'll be saying goodbye and thank you to George Farghar, also a member of Burton Rugby Club.  He has run our after school rugby club for years, but is now passing the baton on to Miss Fletcher.  It was her first experience of running a team at an event last night, she was helped by Miss Berry who has attended at least 20 events so far this year.  Big thanks to both of them!

The Y5/6 event took place at the same time as the Y3/4 event.  Team WS won all their group games and played Edge Hill in the final.  The game ended 4-4 with both teams scoring some scintillating tries.  The drive and determination of both teams was clear to see.  Both teams were delighted to find out that they would share the honours instead of having to play extra time or golden try.  There were Burton Rugby Club members in both teams, and the WS team was made up of mostly Y5 pupils, so next year's event might see team WS do well again.  Fingers crossed!
