Active Dorset Inclusive Health Check

Posted 1st January 2019

Rob Belbin sees first-hand the impact on young people of a well-executed Schools Inclusive Health Check (IHC). He and his colleagues recognised that a reflective IHC could support strategic Local Organising Committee (LOC) partners to reassess and improve their work, even those aspects that were already performing well. With the support of Active Dorset, he and fellow School Games Organisers (SGOs) developed a robust LOC IHC which partners in turn used to direct and drive change.

“LOC meetings can be high focused and budget orientated. This was about assessing tangible outcomes.”

A renewed focus on young people's outcomes

Initial completion of the LOC IHC was conducted with colleagues prior to the April 2018 meeting. SGOs were engaged to ensure the widest relevance and their buy-in: it was important that this exercise highlighted areas of opportunity within what was being done well.

The IHC revealed the likely impact of increased personal commitment to the inclusive School Games amongst PE staff in hard to reach schools and it was felt that this could be achieved with directed SGO focus. However, it also raised questions:

  • Does the competition calendar meet the needs of all young people with SEND?
  • Is the current positioning of the School Games appropriate?
  • Are young people’s competition experiences adequate and appropriate
