England Athletics Launches funetics Multi-Challenge to Inspire Young Athletes
On your marks, get set, go! Introducing funetics multi-challenge, the new competition format for primary-aged children from England Athletics.
England Athletics are introducing a new competition format - funetics Multi-Challenge (FMC). It aims to give primary school-aged children more regular, age-appropriate opportunities to experience athletics in a fun and inclusive way.
FMC is in pilot phase with clubs and associations across the country, and School Games Organisers are invited to get involved during this early phase.
Building on the popularity of Sportshall Athletics, FMC gives more children in Years 3 to 6 a fun, inclusive start to their competitive journey. The focus is on enjoyment, team spirit, and personal improvement, rather than winning.
At the heart of the programme is funetics - England Athletics’ dynamic framework that teaches the core athletic skills of running, jumping, and throwing through accessible and inclusive activities. funetics supports all levels of ability; it is deliverable indoors or outdoors year-round, even in limited spaces with minimal equipment. With funsetics, every pupil is involved and celebrated, regardless of ability or disability.
Key Features of funetics Multi-Challenge:
- Age-appropriate, inclusive competition format for Years 3–6
- Emphasises fun, participation, and skill development
- Free to access for schools – no need to sign up to the full funetics programme
- Challenges are scored using the free Roster app, available to affiliated organisations
- Nationally coordinated and endorsed by England Athletics
- Designed to develop fundamental skills that support both FMC and Sportshall events
- Currently being piloted ahead of wider rollout in 2026
With upcoming age group changes, the funetics multi-challenge offers an ideal way to introduce children to athletics in a supportive, engaging environment.
