Autumn Term Round-Up

Mr Brooks, 3 Feb 2020

Here's a round-up of the PE and sport activities that took place at Bidston Avenue, during the autumn term.

Autumn Term Round-Up

Autumn 2019 has been a busy term.  Here is a round-up of the PE and school sport that Bidston Avenue's children took part in.

Y6 Houlihan Cup

Our Y6 football team kicked off another exciting year of competitive sport as they took on Birkenhead School, in the Houlihan Cup.  Despite a strong start and creating some great chances in front of goal, Birkenhead School were ruthless in taking their chances and finished the game as winners.

Y4&5 Corgi Cup

Our Y4&5 footballers were also in cup action this half term, in the Corgi Cup.  In what was a great fixture for a neutral (but a nail-biting one for anybody else) both teams created plenty of chances and so at full time the score was 5-5.  With penalties looming, the first half of extra time was a cagey affair with both sides reluctant to go forward.  However, in the second half the Bidston Avenue team really went for the win and scored an incredible four goals in five minutes. Final score Bidston Avenue 9 Sacred Heart 5.  Well done to all those involved and a special mention to Leighton Wood (Y5) for scoring a double hat-trick!

TRFC Tournament

In pretty awful conditions, our Y6 footballers travelled to Co-op Academy Bebington, to take part in a tournament organised by Tranmere Rovers.  The Bidston Avenue side started quickly and adjusted to the short game format well, winning their first two games.  In their third match, a goal from a free kick undid the hard work the team had put in in getting back into the game after going one nil behind.  Unfortunately, there wasn't enough time to find the back of the net again despite a number of chances.

Ridgeway Futsal League

After taking part in the inaugural year of Ridgeway High School's Futsal League, we have signed up to take part this year and took part in the first round of fixtures before half term. Both teams taking part enjoyed the chance to play some futsal and develop their skills on and off the ball.  We're looking forward to taking part in the next round of fixtures after Christmas.

Y5&6 Sportshall Athletics Competition

Since September, Mr Mark Roberts (a former Wirral teacher with vast experience coaching athletics) has been working with a group of Y5&6 children at an after-school club.  Alongside Ms Ryan and Miss Kelly's lunchtime training sessions, a team of Bidston Avenue athletes have been honing their skills and striving for personal bests in activities such as the vertical jump, standing long jump, ball push etc.  The team competed against children from St. Michael and All Angels Catholic Primary School, in preparation for an event competing against schools from across the Wirral.  At both events, our team achieved some great results and personal bests.  In particular, a fantastic performance at the Wirral School Games competition saw the team win the evening's competition and qualify for the 2020 Merseyside School Games, as one of the top 3 school teams in Wirral.  Congratulations to all those involved!

Houlihan Cup v New Brighton

In possibly some of the wettest conditions we have played in, our Y5&6 footballers took on New Brighton Primary, in the group stages of the Houlihan Cup.  A closely contested game, which included some great goals and super saves down at the other end, finished in a win for New Brighton.  Well done to all those involved and a special thanks to Mason's dad, who stepped in as team coach, and Mathew's dad who took on the role of photographer.

Everton FC's Premier League Schools' Tournament

Our Y5&6 footballers took part in Everton FC's Premier League Schools' Tournament, where they competed against teams from across the Wirral.  The team began the morning with an emphatic 9-0 win and only lost one of their four matches.  Unfortunately, this wasn't enough to progress to the next round of the competition but well done to all those who took part.

Y6 Girls' LFC Tournament

Our Y6 girls' football team recently took part in a competition organised by the Liverpool FC Foundation.  In the first outing for our girls' team this year, they demonstrated great teamwork and enjoyed a great morning of football.  A special mention to our goalkeeper, Charlotte, who was picked as goalkeeper of the tournament, after making a number fantastic saves during the morning.  Well done to all those who took part.

After-school clubs

Our after-school clubs run each week and are popular with children from Y1-6.  School staff, as well as coaches from local sports clubs, offer a variety of clubs from gymnastics through to multi-skills.  Our Sports Council have helped to come up with clubs that children in their class like, encouraging more children to take part in physical activity as part of their everyday lives.

Aldi's Kit for Schools

Thank you to all those families who have helped to collect Aldi's Team GB stickers over the last few months.  Thanks to your fantastic support, we were able to collect over 2000 stickers- an incredible amount!  This means that as well as being entered into a prize draw to win £20,000 for PE and sport, we will also receive six sets of sports kit which include balls, bibs, bean bags and other goodies.

The autumn term in numbers:

  • 20 after-school clubs on offer
  • Around 120 children involved in after-school sports clubs each week
  • 400,000 active minutes- that's how much time children from Y1-6 have been involved in PE/sport activities (ranging from the daily mile and PE lessons, to competitions)
