Winners - Year 5/6 Girls’ Football Tournament @ Marston’s - Tuesday 16th October 2018

This evening, two teams of Y5 and 6 girls competed in the East Staffordshire Girls’ football competition held at Marston’s. The competition consisted of 2 groups: Edge Hill A were in a league with 4 other schools; Edge Hill B were in a group with 5 other schools. Each game was an 8 minute match one-way with the top two teams from each group advancing into the semi-finals.

Edge Hill A drew their first game 0-0 with Richard Wakefield before beating Horninglow 1-0 in their second match after a thunderbolt from Lily. In their third game, the girls drew 0-0 with a team they had never faced before in Richard Crosse. In their final game, the girls beat William Shrewsbury B 3-0 after they managed to make the most of their chances - goals from Mia W, Millie and Skye.

Edge Hill B played against William Shrewsbury A in their first game. Some of the girls had never played competitive football before and this showed as WS ran away 6-0 winners. However, this did not phase them as they were in action again straight after against Rykneld and came back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with goals from their stand out player Chloe. The girls then lost against St Modwen’s and Eton Park in close games and managed to draw 1-1 against Scientia after a poacher’s finish from Holly in their final game. Edge Hill B should be extremely proud of their attitude and resilience as they were a credit to the school.

Edge Hill A qualified for the semi-finals after winning their group. They faced off against William Shrewsbury A who had finished 2nd in the other group. There were very few chances in the game as both defences stood very strong throughout the game. A special mention has to go to Paris whom made some excellent saves to keep EH in the game. The game then went straight to penalties where each team had a total of 9 penalties each. Mia W, Lily and Fearne all scored their penalty with the other girls not successfully converting theirs. It fell to Lily to strike home the winning penalty in a sudden death situation to send the team into the final.

In the final, Edge Hill faced old rivals Richard Wakefield who had finished second in the same group as the girls. There were some fantastic performances from Fearne in defence and Paris again in goal who made some brilliant saves. Mia W and Skye were unfortunate in front of goal and came inches from snatching the game. The final whistle then went which sent the game to extra time where both teams continued to nullify each other until the very end. With seconds to go, a Richard Wakefield player hit a shot from near the halfway line which looked a certain goal until Paris made an amazing save to send the game to another penalty shootout.  The girls were not phased by a second shootout in as many games and were all wanting to take a penalty. Mia and Lily both scored their penalties and with RW missing both of their first two after more saves from Paris, Marnie stepped up to hit her penalty into the top corner. RW then missed their final penalty resulting in the girls winning the shootout 3-0. A fantastic achievement for the girls and the school.
